Purchasing maternity clothes is just like starting a new wardrobe at the beginning of the season. You need to choose your basic pieces and then add your accessories. The first items that you should purchase are undergarments: new bras, stockings, leggings, and underwear. Be sure when you purchase a maternity bra you are fitted for the bra; you need to be comfortable. If you decide to nurse wait until the third trimester before purchasing a bra. When purchasing maternity items remember to buy the size you were before you were pregnant. If you were a six, buy a six; if you were a twelve; buy a twelve. You are still the same size, your belly is just bigger.
The next things that you should be concerned with purchasing are your basic pants, jeans, and skirts. Try to purchase them in neutral colors such as black, khaki, gray, and if it is summer purchase a pair in white. By purchasing your clothing in basic colors you can mix and match shirts, sweaters, and pullovers.
Many pregnant moms like legging sets as well; if you are comfortable in them by all means buy a set or two.
It is also helpful to purchase a lightweight blazer or jacket, in wool or linen depending on the time of year that you are pregnant. By having a jacket, you can always dress up a skirt, trousers, or jeans.
